Everyone has something worth recording.
Very few leave a book worth reading.

For an individual or an institution alike, most of what is experienced, thought, strived for and achieved disappears without ever being recorded. In institutions this happens more. The work goes on and no proper record of it is made. When one is made, it is usually to complete a formality. There is no seriousness behind it. Very little attention is paid to the details and editorial nuances.

We work hardest on what most people overlook.

What should come in which order, what belongs in a book and what does not, which passage asks to be opened out and which is finished in a line, deciding this is the editor's work. We give books a form that will be read and that becomes, in its own way, a part of the record.
